Firefighters are continuing to respond to the Brava Fire in the Shell Beach area of Pismo Beach after a brush fire broke out Sunday afternoon near Costa Brava and Highway 101.
The fire was reported shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 30, after a caller reported flames burning in vegetation near Costa Brava. A local report said a neighbor told authorities he had seen a man allegedly setting the fire, and a suspect was subsequently taken into custody. The blaze spread up a ridge behind nearby homes and burned approximately 25 to 30 acres.
Firefighters attacked the blaze from both the ground and air as crews worked to prevent it from spreading toward residential areas. The incident was identified as the Brava Fire, and the latest local reporting indicates that investigators are treating the fire as suspected arson.
By Monday, the situation had improved considerably. KSBY reported that the Brava Fire had reached 90% containment, although firefighting and monitoring operations were continuing.
The fire occurred in the Shell Beach portion of Pismo Beach, an area served by CAL FIRE/Pismo Beach Fire Dept Station 63 on Shell Beach Road. Emergency crews remain prepared to respond to any additional flare-ups or new fire activity in the area.
There have been no confirmed reports in the information reviewed of fatalities resulting from the Brava Fire. Earlier reports also did not identify significant structural damage, although the fire burned vegetation close to residential properties.
