The Holgate community is mourning the loss of Hunter Thomas Gerschutz, who died at the age of 23, leaving behind family, friends, former teammates and many others who will remember him for his energetic personality, athletic spirit and ability to bring people together.
According to his published obituary, Hunter was born on June 28, 2003, to Debra Clement and Thomas Gerschutz. He attended Holgate Local Schools and graduated in 2022.
Sports played an important role in Hunter’s school years. He participated in both football and baseball, experiences that became an important part of his youth and helped shape the friendships and memories he carried into adulthood.
Following high school, Hunter worked with Premier Patching. Those who knew him described him as fun, outgoing and athletic, with a personality that made it easy for people to feel comfortable around him.
Outside of work, Hunter enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved attending concerts, playing pool and poker, and making the most of time spent with the people closest to him.
His sudden passing has left his family facing the painful loss of a young man who still had many years ahead of him. At only 23, Hunter’s life was filled with relationships, experiences and possibilities that his loved ones will now remember through stories and shared memories.
Hunter is survived by his parents, Thomas Gerschutz and Debra Clement, and his siblings, Joshua, Garrett, Mariah, Cheyenne and Rusty. He also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members and numerous friends.
For those who knew Hunter, his memory will be closely tied to the laughter, energy and companionship he brought into their lives. His family and friends will continue to remember the moments they shared with him, from sporting events and concerts to ordinary gatherings that have now become treasured memories.
Funeral arrangements have been announced through Zachrich Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Holgate. Friends and relatives will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral service will take place Thursday at 11 a.m., with Reverend James Haugen officiating. Burial will follow at Marion Township Cemetery in Hamler.
According to the published obituary, memorial contributions may be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
As Hunter’s family and friends gather to say goodbye, they will remember not only the sadness of his passing but also the joy he brought to the people around him.
