The South Jersey community continues to mourn the loss of William Christian “Will” Murray, a 21-year-old Northfield resident who passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026. His death has left family members, friends, fellow lifeguards, musicians, coworkers and others who knew him remembering a young man whose individuality, kindness and passion for music made him unforgettable.
Born on October 19, 2004, in Somers Point, New Jersey, Will was described by his family as a unique soul who saw life through his own eyes. He was never afraid to be different, and his independent personality became one of the qualities that made him stand out.
Will was remembered as a kind young man who loved animals and naturally cared about those who were vulnerable or overlooked. He began working at Randall’s Seafood before later working for Calvi Electric and Leeds Construction, building friendships and connections along the way.
The Jersey Shore was another important part of Will’s life. He loved summer, the ocean and the beach and proudly served as a Longport lifeguard for six seasons. His time on the beach became an important chapter in his life, bringing him friendships and experiences that he carried with him.
Music, however, remained his greatest passion.
Will’s journey as a performer began when he sang Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” at a Mainland football team dinner. That early performance helped spark a love of performing that would eventually take him onto local stages.
He later had the opportunity to open for the Usual Suspects at the Margate Log Cabin, an experience that marked an important moment in his development as a musician.
Influenced by classic rock and country, Will developed a musical identity that reflected his refusal to be confined to a single style. He brought his own personality to his performances and connected with audiences through his enthusiasm and authenticity.
For three summers, Will performed Thursday nights at the Log Cabin, where staff members and audiences became familiar with his music and personality.
In 2025, he helped form Scarlet Mae, serving as the band’s frontman and bassist. His bandmates, Chris and Luis, became close friends as they spent countless hours rehearsing, performing and writing music together.
For Will, music was more than simply performing. It was a form of expression and a way to connect with people. The stage became one of the places where his individuality and creativity could shine.
Following his death, family and friends gathered to celebrate his life and say goodbye.
A viewing was scheduled for Monday, August 31, 2026, beginning at 7:30 a.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 5 Marvin Avenue, Linwood, New Jersey. A service followed at 10:00 a.m.
In a fitting tribute to Will’s distinctive personality, his family requested that those attending come dressed in “Will Murray” style attire, reflecting the individual sense of style that was so much a part of who he was.
The family also asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Will’s name to the Freebird Foundation.
His farewell offered family, friends and members of the community an opportunity to remember the many different sides of his life — the young man who loved the ocean, the lifeguard who spent six seasons protecting swimmers, the musician who found joy on stage and the friend who brought his own personality into every room he entered.
At just 21, Will had already created a collection of memories that will remain with the people who knew him. His years may have been few, but the relationships he formed and the passions he pursued gave his life meaning.
For his family, friends, fellow musicians and fellow lifeguards, his absence will be deeply felt. Yet his memory will continue through the songs he performed, the friendships he built, the summers he spent at the shore and the countless stories that will be told about him.
William Christian “Will” Murray will be remembered as a young man who was never afraid to be himself. His love of music, the ocean and the people around him helped define his life, and the impact he made during his 21 years will continue to be carried forward by those who loved him.
