Fort Collins Accident: One Dead, Five Injured After Pickup Truck Hits Pedestrians in Old Town

A tragic crash in Fort Collins has left one person dead and five others injured after a pickup truck drove onto a sidewalk and struck multiple pedestrians in the city’s Old Town area Saturday morning, August 29, 2026.

According to Fort Collins Police Services, emergency dispatchers began receiving calls about the crash at approximately 11:44 a.m. The incident occurred on Mountain Avenue, during the city’s annual Tour de Fat bicycle festival. Police said six people, including the driver, were taken to hospitals following the crash.

A preliminary investigation found that the Chevrolet pickup had initially been backing out of a parking space when it struck another vehicle. The truck then moved forward onto the sidewalk, where it hit several pedestrians before continuing into a tree and coming to a stop.

One person later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the person who died, pending notification of family.

Five other people, including the driver, were transported for medical treatment. Three patients were taken to UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital, while three others, including the driver, were transported to UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies, according to local reporting. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The crash occurred less than a mile from the busy bicycle festival, prompting immediate concern because of the large number of people gathered in the area. Police have not indicated that the pedestrians were intentionally targeted, and investigators are examining the circumstances that preceded the crash, including whether impairment may have contributed.

The roadway was closed for several hours while officers investigated, documented the scene and gathered evidence. Fort Collins Police said victim advocates were also supporting people affected by the incident.

The crash has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a major community celebration in Fort Collins. Tour de Fat traditionally draws large crowds to Old Town, making the incident particularly distressing for residents, visitors, witnesses and emergency responders.

Authorities continue to investigate what caused the driver to leave the roadway and strike pedestrians. Additional information, including the identity of the person who died and the condition of the injured victims, is expected as officials notify relatives and complete the investigation.

For now, the Fort Collins community is left mourning one life lost and hoping for the recovery of those injured in the devastating crash.
