A devastating wrong-way collision on Interstate 270 in the Bethesda area has left two people dead and several others injured, according to Maryland State Police.
Troopers from the Rockville Barrack responded at approximately 6:46 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2026, to the southbound spur of I-270 just south of Democracy Boulevard following reports of a serious two-vehicle crash.
A preliminary investigation found that a Ford Mustang was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided head-on with a Toyota sedan traveling on the interstate. Two passengers in the Toyota were transported to area hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead.
The Mustang driver was also transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities had not initially released information about that person’s condition. The Toyota’s driver and the circumstances surrounding how the Mustang entered the highway were also part of the ongoing investigation.
